Pledge template

This Pledge Template is designed to help local authorities develop their ‘Care Matters Pledge’ to young people in and leaving care. The template has been put together by The National Care Advisory Service and the National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum and suggests the types of commitments local authorities should make to their young people, reflecting the standards.

A Local Authority’s Pledge to its children in care is a requirement of the new Children and Young Person’s Bill arising from the Government’s Care Matters initiative.  The Pledge should set out the services that the local authority as ‘corporate parent’ will provide for its children and young people.

This document is web-based to enable you to download it, work on it with young people, change it around and put it to use in your own context with your own young people. If you would like to share the results of your work on it with us, we would be very happy to hear from you.

The launch of the Pledge Template took place at the end of a two-day benchmarking forum event in Care Leavers Week, October 2008, involving 40 young people and staff from all over the country.

Earl Listowel, launching the Template, said: “I am delighted to be a part of the work on the Pledge Template which we hope will help local authorities provide meaningful promises to their young people leaving care.”
