Peer Support model

The WMTD Peer Support Model will help local authorities develop schemes that enable young people to support each other in their services. This tested model offers a less formal route than traditional mentoring and can be applied to a whole range or peer-to-peer activities.

The model has been developed from the research and development work carried out by WMTD and our partner authorities. We have researched models of peer mentoring and advocacy, working closely with colleagues in our partner local authority leaving care services to explore ideas about how it can work in leaving care services.

The Peer Support Model differs from peer mentoring and is designed to offer a more flexible approach to the supportive relationships, including offering advocacy in its broadest sense, between young people. It does not require such extensive training and support as a traditional mentoring scheme, but enables young people to develop positive relationships and new skills as supporters and supportees with the full support of their leaving care team.
