From Care2Work is launched by Ed Balls

FromCare 2 Work, funded by the Department of Education was officially launched today (7 July 2009) at Tate Modern. The initiative will draw upon expertise from employers, third sector organisations, advisory services and every local authority in the country, to tackle the inequality between care leavers and their peers at the crucial point at which they leave care and enter the jobs market.

NCAS employability managers will work with local authorities, employers and young people to create opportunities for care leavers across the country. Young people will receive advice, training, work experience and job mentoring, and will have their opportunities for placements and jobs significantly increased via a network of national employers from the private, public and voluntary sectors. A career plan for their transition into work will be drawn up with young people in care to ensure that the most disadvantaged young people don’t fall through the net.

As part of the scheme, four traineeships will be created within the National Care Advisory Service and two more in the Positive Futures programme that Catch22 runs on behalf of the Home Office. NCAS will also help young people to develop their own ‘quality mark’ to award to employers that can demonstrate a strong commitment to offering supportive opportunities for care leavers.

The scheme was launched today at Tate Modern, at an event where Joyce Moseley, Ed Balls MP, Baroness Morgan and Angela Smith MP commented on the importance of this new approach.

John Hill, National Manager of NCAS, said: “This is the first national initiative, bringing together local and national partners including central government, that will focus on developing the most effective career opportunities for young people in and from care. It will raise the profile of this group of young people, highlighting their individual needs, but also their aspirations and the enormous range of talent they possess. It is a great opportunity for us all to make a real difference.”
